CAMP DESCRIPTIONS

BRAND NEW THEMES THIS SUMMER!!!

Savvy Scientists

Kids will use their imaginations and have fun with chemistry and experimentation in this “curiosity” camp!  The children will invent and create a cardboard classroom rocket, a comet using everyday items, and even make geysers.  They will investigate water flow, air pressure, and experiment with magnets.  Through teamwork the children will explore simple machines and work with tools to build and discover how to make things happen. Children will learn to appreciate discovery while focusing on math and science!

Center Stage – Hip Hop

Children will sing and dance their way through this high energy week! This dance adventure will introduce your child to Hip Hop, Jazz, and modern moves. Games, rhythm, and beginner choreography will build balance, strength, and endurance. Let’s get ready to move and groove. Hey, D.J., turn that music up!

Snack-er-cise

Children will learn the basics of cooking while helping to prepare their own healthy foods.  If that is not cool enough, they will exercise while the food chills or bakes! Prepare for our taste tantalizing menu of alphabet biscuits, ants on a log, and apple smiles to name a few. Yummy, yummy!

Kid’s Café

Young chefs will create their very own café!  They will plan a menu, make grocery lists, set a table, and take orders. The children will enjoy assembling, measuring, mixing, and chopping.  Their culinary skills will take off as they make their own spice blends, cook, and sample their delectable creations!

Blooming Artists

This camp is for the young artist who wants to use a variety of art media.  Each child will produce art using process and exploration.  Choices may include painting with watercolors, tempura paints, tie dying, drawing with pencils, charcoal or pastels, print making, and more. Purchase some frames because masterpieces are on the way!

Busy Bodies…Busy Minds

Combining physical activity with creative problem solving, Busy Bodies will develop muscles and strengthen minds.  We invite children to participate in fun, energetic games that require teamwork, cooperation, coordination, and inventive thinking.  The children will use their creativity to modify aspects of familiar games and then play their new versions!  These Busy Bodies will tumble, balance, and boost brain power!

Author, Author Tell Us Your Story!

Explore the world of story making!  We’ll bring out your child’s natural curiosity about the world in a playful and encouraging environment.  The children will become involved in creative dramatics through storytelling, skits, art projects, songs, and team building activities.  Creating your own stories is an adventure of discovery and learning.  If you want to be a story teller, let us be your audience!

Island Luau

Dive in to this weekly adventure and explore the islands.  We will learn about sea creatures and aquatic life, enjoy a game of beach ball, and practice math skills with sea shells and other ocean treasures.  Adventurers will enjoy their own luau complete with Hawaiian dress, hula dancing, leis, and island foods.  This carefree beach life awaits!

Construction Zone

Girls and boys, go beyond just blocks to Construction Junction!  This advanced program lets children learn how to plan, build and construct their own 3-D art projects!  Roads, towers, bridges, monuments and pyramids are just a sample of the structures to be introduced, imagined and created with wood, collage, cloth, and clay.

Biz Kids                 Ages 5-8

JUNE, JULY, OR AUGUST

Let’s get your biz up and running!  Kids will establish a society, create money, advertise, open businesses, and produce goods and services to sell.  This “mini society” simulation focuses on economics and government allowing children to take part in a real world experience and self-directed learning.  Children will discover the importance of cooperation, goal setting, and self-sufficiency.

As the businesses swing into action with their “Grand Opening”, the children become proud owners and consumers.  Social experiences and healthy interactions between the children emphasize learning in multiple subject areas.  By the end of the month, the children will master concepts that influence the success of a business and in turn, be a better community citizen.

***Every Friday, local business people will come in and speak to the children about their specific industry and allow the children to ask questions!***

Reading Rockets           Ages 4-7

MONTHLY OR ALL SUMMER LONG

Reading Rockets is ideal for students ages 4-7 who would like advanced instruction or academic support on their journey to becoming a successful reader.  This program will provide instant success and positive reinforcement to young readers in a fun, motivating environment.  We will use the “Picture Me Reading” program to learn letter sounds and high frequency words in an active environment with an integrated approach that parallels Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences.

*Your child will receive an entry skills assessment the first week of camp that covers components of alphabet knowledge, letter sound knowledge, word identification, and concept of words (developmentally appropriate).  This will allow the teacher to create an individualized learning plan to assist in extended summer learning.

“Educators consider summer reading very important in developing life-long reading habits, in maintaining literacy skills and in promoting reading for pleasure.  Studies have repeatedly shown that children who continue to read during the summer months perform better when school resumes in the fall.”

Spanish Immersion            Ages 4-7

MONTHLY OR ALL SUMMER LONG
Spanish Immersion is a class designed to teach children a new language in a fun and entertaining environment.  This camp, along with the “Kinderspeak Spanish” Curriculum, will expose your child to the Spanish language through traditional stories, play activities, repetitive patterns, song, dance, and music.  Spanish Immersion is structured to encourage children to play games and sing songs familiar to them with curriculum including alphabet, colors, counting, animals, clothing, food, family, body parts, and culture.  Learning will be combined with socialization, movement, art, and music to create a challenging and fun experience!

***The instructor is a native of Venezuela!  Previous Spanish is not required.***

“The area of our brain devoted to language robustly develops from ages three to eight.  During this age range, our minds develop the neural pathways for using words, and it is the optimal time for your child to acquire Spanish language skills.  Learning more than one language doesn’t confuse children, but rather aids them in mastering their primary language.”
